Behind the Clay

SJ Nam Pottery is a blend of my full-time work as a data analyst and my passion for ceramics. Pottery gives me a peaceful contrast to the demands of everyday life, allowing me to slow down and create without the pressure of perfection. In the studio, I celebrate the natural beauty of each piece—embracing its unique qualities and finding meaning in forms that may not be flawless, but are full of character.

Inspired by my Korean heritage, my work draws from traditional Korean pottery techniques, which focus on simplicity, balance, and craftsmanship, while also capturing the quiet beauty of nature—the unnoticed details of fruits, trees, the sky, snow, and stars. Every piece is intentionally crafted in a community studio in Philadelphia, where I have the privilege of creating alongside a talented group of potters.

Through my pottery, I hope to bring a little calm and joy into your space, whether it’s as a cherished decorative piece or a small part of your daily routine.
